Armed Forces Day at Letterkenny Army Depot - May , 2011
President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.
Letterkenny Army Depot has Armed Forces Day celebration in May of every year.
Visitors are able to participate in HMMWV rides and tours of the Depot's facilities to include the Munitions area, the Maintenance Facility, the Tactical Repair Center and the cemeteries and former homesteads. Many children's activities are offered such as the fishing rodeo sponsored by LEAD's Rod and Gun Club, pony rides, face painting, games with an agility course and amusements. Many vendors are on display to sell merchandise at the bazaar. Information on this years Armed Forces Day Events
