Wounded Warrior Program

Taking care of wounded Warriors is an important part of the Army's mission. The Army Wounded Warrior (AW2) Program is the official Army program that serves severely wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers, veterans and their families. Letterkenny Army Depot contains vast acres of hunting grounds and has specifically designed opportunities for Wounded Warrior Soldiers from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) to participate in hunts at the Depot. Two hunting dates were held for six Wounded Warrior Soldiers and their escorts from WRNMMC. They successfully harvested two antlered deer, including an 8-point buck, as well as an antlerless deer.  Since 2007 LEAD has hosted 16 hunts for 43 AW2 Soldiers, veterans and their families harvesting a total of 48 deer.

In the spring, Letterkenny hosts a two-day AW2 gobbler hunt providing Soldiers with the resources to equip them with the opportunity to harvest turkeys. Volunteers from the Natural Resources Program assist by escorting the Soldiers throughout their hunt and provide turkey-calling expertise. During the 2012 Spring Gobbler Hunt, a Soldier from the Warrior Transition Brigade at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) along with one cadre escort each harvested 20-pound gobblers with 9-inch beards. Since 2008 LEAD has held nine hunts for 24 Soldiers from WRNMMC harvesting nine turkeys.
